He first settled in Wardsboro, Vermont, and about 1820 located at Jamestown, New York, following his eight sons there.

He was a revolutionary soldier, serving in Colonel Sprout's regiment (Massachusetts), also in Captain Ephraim Hartwell's company of guards, also in Colonel Tyler's regiment (Massachusetts).
