He was an extensive cattle drover and was known widely throughout New York state as "Uncle Eb." He took large droves of cattle overland to the New York markets, returning with the pay for them packed away in his huge saddle-bags. He had many business dealings with Henry Astor, brother of the New York dry goods prince, John Jacob Astor.
