He passed his boyhood on his father's farm and attended the common schools of his neighborhood. Not caring to engage in farming he came in 1876 to Scottdale, Pennsylvania, and entered into the butchering business. He was an active worker in the Republican party and a member of the Methodist Episcopal church.
