He was born in Lancaster County, Pennsylvania, and was a boy of about seven years when his parents moved to Mifflin County, where he grew to manhood. He married and they settled on a nearby farm in Brown township, which he purchased, containing about one hundred and seventy-five acres, where they resided continuously until death. Both were members of the Presbyterian church; he was an influential Democrat and associate judge of Mifflin County.
