He was educated at Oberlin College. In 1865, he located in Sharon, Pennsylvania, and became paymaster of the P. L. Kimberly Co. Later he became manager of the Greenville Rolling Mill and after several years became connected with the Republican Iron and Steel Co. and other interests in Sharon and vicinity and was recognized as an expert in his calling. For many years, he was a director of the Merchants and Manufacturers National Bank of Sharon; was active head of the Oakwood Cemetery Association, president and director of the Sharon Railway. He materially assisted in placing the Christian H. Buhl Hospital upon its high standing among like institutions and was a member of its board of directors for a long term of years. He was a charter member of the Duquesne Club of Pittsburgh and Greenville Lodge F. & A. M. He was also a member and regular attendant of the First Presbyterian Church of Sharon served a number of years as a trustee. In politics, he was a Republican.
