General Notes: Husband - Thomas S. Irwin
He attended the district schools, and worked on his father's farm until nineteen years of age, when he left home to learn the carpenter trade with George Wilson, of his native township. After serving an apprenticeship of three years, he began work for himself, and followed his trade, building houses, barns, etc., until 1855, when he and his brother built a steam saw-mill, which he operated for eight and one-half years, and thereafter his principal employment was farming.
From 1837 to 1845 he was major of the First Battalion, Tenth Regiment, of the State militia, and from 1846 to 1848 he was lieutenant-colonel of a regiment of volunteers of Claysville. During the Civil War he was enrolling officer of the Donegal district.
In 1872 he was appointed postmaster of Claysville, which had been his home since 1834, and he occupied that position for more than a decade, being reappointed as his commissions expired. In politics he was a Republican. In 1847 he united with the Presbyterian Church, and in 1863 became an elder in the same.
