He attended the Sterrett School, Shady Side Academy, and graduated with honors for scholarship from the Hill School at Pottstown, Pennsylvania, in 1906. He took his degree at Yale in 1910, and was a member of the P. S. I. Fraternity and of the Elihu Club. He served as captain in the Chemical War Service of U. S. A. during the First World War.
He was vice president of the Armstrong Cork Company, Armstrong Cork and Insulation Company, a director of the Union National Bank, and a member of the Duquesne Club.
