He was eight years of age when he left Ireland and came with his parents to the United States, the family settling in Crawford County, Pennsylvania.
He settled in Sandy Creek Township, Mercer County, when he was twenty-two years of age, and there spent the balance of his life as a pioneer farmer, dying at the age of fifty years. He was a devoted member of the Methodist church and also a pioneer Democrat.

He and his wife were the parents of three sons and three daughters; only two of these were still living in 1909.
