He resided in New Haven, Connecticut, and in 1639 signed the Covenant of that place. He was also among the signers of the Fundamental Agreement, on June 24, 1667, which made him one of the founders of the Newark settlement on the Passaic river, New Jersey, where the city of Newark now stands.
