General Notes: Husband - Capt. W. Seward B. Hays

He was born where the Union Station of the Pennsylvania Railroad was later located in Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania. When he was six months old his parents moved to Butler County, Pennsylvania, and three years later to Mifflin township, Allegheny County, where he obtained his education in private and public schools. On his father's farm he worked until eighteen years of age, at which time he commenced running on the river, assisting his father.
He resided on the old homestead farm in Mifflin township. He and his wife were members of Lebanon Presbyterian Church; in politics he was a republican.

At the age of eighteen years he commenced to assist his father in the management of the steamboats owned by the latter, and was occupied successively as a steamboat pilot, boat owner and captain until 1890, and later became a successful coal merchant in Pittsburgh.
