General Notes: Husband - James S. Hays

---

He was born on the home farm in Smith township, Washington County, Pennsylvania, being trained from early youth to the vocation of a husbandman, which he continued to follow through life. He obtained his early knowledge of literature from the common schools, remaining with his parents until attaining maturity. After their marriage he and his wife located on a part of the “old Stevenson tract” adjoining his birthplace, where he always resided with the exception of four years passed in Robinson township, Washington County.
