He was born at Derg Bridge, county Tyrone, Ireland; married, and had a large family, most of whose descendants came to America "between the Peace and 1789."

William and Dickey Hays located at "Bald Ridge," in, then, Northumberland County, Pennsylvania; James; (Rev.) Joseph, of County
Down, Ireland, another son, father of Matthew, of Triana town, Madison
County, Alabama; William, of Wythe Court House, Virginia; Rebecca Hay-Leitch; Sarah Hay-McCormick, of Pittsburgh, Pa., and Elizabeth, who remained in Ireland.
