She was born in Henderson township, Jefferson County, Pennsylvania, on the East Branch, and was educated in the common schools and the Glade Run Academy. She followed teaching and taught eight years in Brookville. She was one of the three persons who successfully passed the first written examination in Jefferson County for a permanent certificate.
After the death of her husband, she left Hornell, New York, and returned to Frostburg, Pennsylvania, to stay with her father and mother, to care for them in their latter years.
