His father came from Germany to America when quite a young man.

He was born in Lancaster County, Pennsylvania, and came to Franklin County in an early day and settled in Letterkenny Township, where he purchased a farm and followed agricultural pursuits until his death. He was a minister and bishop of the River Brethren denomination for many years.
