He was a successful agriculturist and resided on his farm of eighty-five acres, which was situated on the Moravia-Petersburg Road, about four miles west of Moravia, Pennsylvania.

He was educated in the country schools, and from boyhood was trained to be a farmer. After his marriage he came to his farm and erected all the buildings except the barn, which his father put up. In 1905 he completed a commodious, comfortable residence. In addition to cultivating his land, Mr. Hayes did a large dairy business, and he also dealt in stock, and in the winter seasons did considerable butchering.
