In his early boyhood removed with his parents to Genesee County, New York, from whence he went to Springfield, Ohio, and was there engaged in teaching school for several years. In 1835 he took his family and all their possessions, these consisting of an ox team, six sheep and the clothing and household effects, and followed the blazed trail into Cussewago township, Crawford County, Pennsylvania, where he felled trees, erected a log house and barn, and cleared a farm. There he reared his family and spent the remainder of his life. He was an Abolitionist and a Republican.
