He was born in southern Vermont, where his father, a native of Ireland, had settled after serving in the War of 1812.
He was a blacksmith by trade. When aged forty-two years he turned his attention to farming, settling at that time on a farm in Rush Township, Monroe County, New York, and followed agricultural pursuits until the close of his life.
He was a Democrat in politics and served in the office of justice of the peace in Rush Township.
