General Notes: Husband - Clarke Hayes
He was educated in Tiffin, Ohio, in the public schools and Tiffin Academy. While yet a lad he came to Venango County, Pennsylvania, and located at Franklin, and for a short time was employed in a hardware establishment. Attracted to the oil business, which was then just beginning to assume immense proportions, he entered the employ of Charles Leedom, an extensive operator. Later he became intimately associated with two of the leading men in the oil industry, Dr. Cooper and Mr. Kelly, and the three developed the famous Shamokin oil district, one of the most extensive in the state. Mr. Hayes exhibited from the outset a marked ability in this field, and steadily rose in importance, and was for several years before his death division superintendent of the Manufacturers' Light and Heat Company. He was a vestryman of St. John's Protestant Episcopal Church, Franklin, and a well advanced member of the Masonic order.
