He was born in Lancaster County, Pennsylvania, and received his education at his home in Washington County. He was united in marriage in early life, and followed farming. Politically he was a Democrat, and served as justice of the peace for several terms. He was a member of the Associate Reformed Church until his death in his eighty-seventh year.
