He was born in Schuylkill County, Pennsylvania, but was reared in Brady township, Clearfield County, where during his youth he assisted his father in the arduous task of clearing and developing a new farm during the summer months, while through the winter he pursued his studies in the district schools of the neighborhood. Later he devoted considerable attention to lumbering. Previous to his marriage he purchased of his father a farm on which he then resided and continued to make his home thereafter. Through his untiring efforts it became one of the best cultivated tracts in Sandy township.
