He was born in Schuylkill County, Pennsylvania, and accompanied his parents on their removal to Brady township, Clearfield County, in about 1854, and there he grew to manhood. After his marriage he located on the old homestead, where he continued to live until 1895, when he removed to Du Bois. There he purchased property and engaged in the grocery business.

In early manhood he became interested in agriculture and lumbering, which he followed some years with marked success. In September, 1893, he gave up these occupations to engage in a general mercantile business in Du Bois, where he built a frame store building on Main street.
In politics he was an Independent, and while never an office-seeker, he did serve as overseer of the poor of Sandy township.
He was a director in the Du Bois Deposit Bank.
