He entered Washington and Jefferson College, leaving at close of sophomore year in spring of 1891; was admitted as a cadet to the U. S. Military Academy at West Point, New York, June 1, 1891, by appointment of the Secretary of War, on recommendation of Hon. J. W. Ray, member of Congress from the Twenty-fourth District of Pennsylvania.

He was educated at Washington, Pennsylvania, and was in his third year at Washington and Jefferson College when he received his appointment to West Point, where he graduated in the class of 1895. He was stationed at Fort Riley, Kansas, and sailed with his regiment to the Philippine Islands on December 5, 1909.
