General Notes: Husband - William Wilson Hastings
He was born at the family home near the Hastings mill, where he lived with his parents until his marriage. He had such education as the local schools afforded, and the ordinary experience in farm and lumber work acquired by the young men of his time, before his marriage finding employment at a sawmill in Warren County, Pennsylvania, which he operated both before and after his marriage, also building flatboats there. During the springtime he rafted as far down as Pittsburgh and even to Cincinnati. He bought one hundred acres of his father, giving him five hundred dollars and five years' work for it, most of the labor being put in prior to his marriage, and he earned the money in the occupations above noted, besides spending the summers at home in his father's employ. His land was all in timber when he purchased it, and he cleared seventy-five acres and put it under cultivation, building on it and otherwise improving it throughout his active years. He sawed the lumber for his first house, rafted it to Franklin, and hauled it out to the property, and he also built another house himself, in 1880. He was a man of energetic mental as well as physical habit, and his participation in local affairs was welcomed, the excellent record which he made in the offices of school director, road supervisor and jury commissioner accounting for the confidence of his fellow citizens in his integrity and ability. For many years he was an elder in the Presbyterian Church at Utica, where he and his wife belonged. [HVC 1919, 622]
General Notes: Wife - Mary Jane McQuaid
She was a woman of unusual energy and mental attainment, a splendid mother, who was ambitious that her children receive an education and take their place in their community; she understood motherhood, rearing her children so as to keep them strong of body and attached to honesty, sympathy, and respect for their elders; she was a physician and spiritual adviser in one.
