He was of Scotch extraction, his ancestors coming to America prior to the Revolutionary war.

He was for many years an eminent physician of Mifflin County, Pennsylvania, making his home in Lewistown, but finally retired from active life, and spent his remaining days in Philadelphia, where his death occurred.
He accumulated a large estate, and at the time of his death was worth several hundred thousand dollars.
