He was a graduate of the Missionary Institute at Selinsgrove, Pennsylvania, and of the Michigan Law School. He located at Des Moines, Iowa. Later, he published the Des Moines Leader. He was a staunch Democrat, organizing one of the
first Cleveland-Hendricks clubs in central Pennsylvania. For several years, he was mayor of the city of Anita, Iowa.
