General Notes: Husband - Edward Francis Hartman
He was born at Pattersons Mills, Armstrong County, Pennsylvania, where his father had a blacksmith shop. When he was about seven years old the family moved to Donegal Township, Butler County, and there he attended public school, working on the farm as well. In 1862 he went to Walnut Bend on the Allegheny River, where oil had been discovered and where the business was being developed. Thus began his connection with the industry with which his name was thereafter prominently connected for many years. He later worked in the oil fields of Clarion, Armstrong and Butler counties, and in 1888 he became interested in the firm of the Hartman Oil Company, then composed of Joseph Hartman, his brother, and Joseph Hartman, Jr., his nephew. He continued with this company for a number of years, and engaged in other oil operations until his retirement from the oil business about 1905.
Politically Mr. Hartman stood in the rank and file of the Democratic party, but never sought office. He and his family were communicants of St. Paul's Roman Catholic Church, McKean Street, Butler.
