General Notes: Husband - Walter Vernon Hodges

He received his education in the schools of his native town and at Jamestown Academy. He began life as an instructor, teaching for four terms in the schools of Russell and Kinzua, Pennsylvania. Having an inclination for a commercial career, he secured a position as clerk with the firm of H. W. Lane & Tomas, of Russell, which he retained for six years. At the end of that period, Mr. Hodges engaged in business for himself, and for three years conducted a general store at Russell with success. The purchase of a hardware, furniture and undertaking business caused him to substitute the conduct of that establishment for the proprietorship of the general store, of which he accordingly disposed. At the end of a year, however, desiring a wider field for the exercise of his energies, he engaged in the lumber business and also gave some attention to real estate, and later became the proprietor of another general store which he conducted for five years. After disposing of this he was extensively engaged in the real estate and building business, erecting several attractive residences and other fine structures in Russell. He was the owner of several large farms and over a thousand acres of valuable land. He was a director in the Conewango Trust Company of Warren.
Typical business man though he was, Mr. Hodges was far more than that. He was often called upon to settle estates as administrator, executor, etc.
His political affiliations were with the Republicans, and his neighbors elected him to serve them as town clerk, town treasurer, township auditor and justice of the peace.
He was a member of the Ancient Order of United Workmen.
