He was a native of Ireland, of Scotch-Irish descent, and a member of the church of England. He came to the United States when a young man and settled in Cecil County, Maryland. He came from Maryland to Westmoreland County, Pennsylvania, when it was yet a wilderness and followed the occupations of weaving and farming. During the Revolutionary war he served in the capacity of a teamster.
