Upon attaining the age when he should take up the practical duties of life for himself, he directed his attention to farming and distilling, abandoning the latter after several years, but continuing the former up to the time of his death. He was a member of the Middle Presbyterian church for more than half a century, and a ruling elder of the same for eleven years. He was a staunch Republican in politics.
