He continued to reside at his father's place until he had reached his majority. His education was received at the local public schools, and the summer months were spent in farm work, and the pastimes of the country boy. Upon the completion of his twenty-first year, however, he left the parental roof, and going West settled for a time in the state of Iowa, where he spent some three years on a dairy farm. At the end of this period, however, he returned to the East, and once more joined his father in the conduct of the latter's dairy near Greensburg. He remained virtually his father's partner up to the time of the elder man's death, and then continued to conduct the dairy farm founded by the latter. In 1912 he bought a farm upon which he then made his home, which consisted of one hundred and fourteen acres and which was located in Mount Pleasant township, nine miles south of Greensburg, five miles north of Mount Pleasant, on the Brick road. Here he carried on dairying operations, maintaining a herd of some twelve cows and selling the milk at wholesale.
He was a Democrat in politics, and in religious belief a Presbyterian, attending the church which he served as a trustee for a number of years.
