He received a good education, and was appointed a midshipman in the U. S. Navy. He passed a few years in the service, but having little inclination for a man-of-war life, he resigned and returned to Harrisburg, where he lived in quiet retirement until the close of his life. He was genial and generous, affable and entertaining, and a student his whole life long.
