He was a practicing physician for some years, and afterwards engaged in the wholesale drug business in Philadelphia, Pennsylvania, and importers under the firm name of Harris, Hale & Co. He died in Vienna while serving as U. S. consul.

from Huntingdon, Pennsylvania.
She acquired much celebrity during the Rebellion in the organization of help, collection and distribution of supplies and delicacies for the Pennsylvania soldiers in home and field hospitals.
During the war of the Rebellion, she was secretary of the Ladies' Aid Society of Philadelphia, Pennsylvania, and in that capacity spent much of her time ministering to the soldiers in the hospitals. Her husband having been appointed consul to Venice in 1870, she went there and remained until his death in 1881; she later resided in Florence, Italy.
