As a young man he entered the service of his father, then taught school several years, meanwhile studying the classics and mathematics under his uncle, Dr. James I. McCormick, at Irwin. He thus was prepared to enter the sophomore class at Washington and Jefferson College in 1877, along with his cousin, Chancellor Samuel Black McCormick, the Dr. McCormick's son. After leaving college he became a deputy sheriff in Allegheny County, and a few years later located with the Pennsylvania Railroad Company, where he continued until his retirement.
