He attended common school until he was sixteen years of age, then attended the high school at Transfer, Pennsylvania, graduating when twenty years of age. He then returned to his parents' farm, known as the Clear Springs farm, from the cooling springs on the place.
In his political affiliations he was a supporter of the Democratic Party. He served multiple terms as a member of the school board.
