He was educated in the Philadelphia, Pennsylvania, schools. He remained on the home farm near that city until after his father's death. In 1864 he enlisted for service in the Civil War, entering Company G, One Hundred and First Regiment, Pennsylvania Volunteer Infantry, and remained in the service until the close of hostilities. He became a charter member of the Butler, Pennsylvania, Post of the Grand Army of the Republic. Before purchasing his own farm he worked for some seven years on the Baltimore & Ohio Railroad, and was foreman of the roundhouse. He owned a very valuable farm, much of it under cultivation, but sixteen acres being in timber, and three oil wells were sunk, one of which was a producer. He raised both grain and stock. His improvements were all of a substantial character. In 1908 he remodeled his residence and created a very comfortable and attractive home.
