He attended the Sterrett School, the George Thurston Preparatory School for Boys and the Hill School of Pottstown, Pennsylvania, where he graduated in 1913. He was a member of the Hill Baseball Team and manager of the Football Team.
He graduated from Yale in 1917, where he was a member of the D. K. E. Fraternity and of the Elihu Club. He served as ensign in the U. S. Navy during the First World War. He became assistant sales manager of the Armstrong Cork Company, Linoleum Division, at Lancaster, Pennsylvania.
