He was a native of Ireland, of Scotch descent.

They came from Ireland to America in June, 1789. They located first at Brandywine, later at Middletown, Allegheny County, Pennsylvania, and finally in Moon township, Beaver County. She was a member of the White Oak Flats Presbyterian Church (later named Mount Carmel Church), and by her gentle Christian example and influence, won her husband into the same church, of he became an honored member.
