General Notes: Husband - Thomas Trees

He was a native of England and came to Salem Cross Roads, Westmoreland County, Pennsylvania. He was a miller and millwright, as were also his sons John, Elisha, James and Isaac.

He and his brother Joseph came to the United States in 1816. They settled first in Baltimore, Maryland, where Thomas bought a horse and rode to Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania; Joseph remaining in Baltimore.
He was educated in England. He was by faith an Episcopalian, and a miller by occupation. He married a daughter of John Hill, of Leechburg, Pennsylvania. Their courtship was a true instance of love at first sight. Mr. Trees had rejected the Hill mill, but, after going to the house to pay his respects to Mr. Hill, he met Elizabeth, and then decided that the mill was just the kind he had been looking for, and in a year he married Elizabeth.
At her marriage her father gave her what was known as "Trees' mills," on Beaver Run, also thirteen acres of land adjoining. "Trees mills" was one of the oldest landmarks in Westmoreland County, having been built in 1802. It was the central place of meeting for all the countryside. It was run at various times by the four sons of Thomas Trees, viz.: John, Levi, Joseph and Isaac. It was the first principal mill in Westmoreland County until the roller process became used. The cottage "Roxbury" just across the creek was built in 1820 by Thomas Trees.

Popularly known as "Squire Tommy," he had been elected justice of the peace shortly after coming to Westmoreland County, and served in that capacity until the time of his death. It was said of him that he possessed the rare faculty of pleasing contending parties. All the troubles of the country-side in which he lived were taken to "Squire Tommy" to be settled, and when leaving "the Squire" each party thought that they had the decision and that the Squire was the only man who could decide justly.
