He was born on the family homestead in Middlesex township, Butler County, Pennsylvania. After receiving a public school education, he learned the carpenter's and painter's trades, which he followed in connection with farming. He later had charge of the old homestead, and devoted his attention to agriculture. Politically, he was a Republican, and was a member of the United Presbyterian church.
