He was born and reared on a farm; was educated at the public schools of the township, and followed agricultural pursuits through life. In 1868 he purchased a farm of 220 acres, a valuable tract of land under a high state of cultivation, and underlaid with coal. He was a member of the Presbyterian Church, and politically a Republican.
