He remained with his father on the farm until thirty years of age, when he married. After his marriage he resided on his father's farm in Greene County, Pennsylvania, until the winter of 1862-63, when he removed to a farm in Morris township, Washington County, four miles west of Prosperity, known as the "Old Post farm," which consisted of about 200 acres.
He was a Democrat, and a member of the Cumberland Presbyterian Church, of which he was an elder.
