General Notes: Husband - Jacob West
He resided on the homestead farm until he was sixteen years of age, in the meantime obtaining a common school education. He then engaged in railroading for three years, after which, in 1859, he went to California, and for six years was engaged in mining for gold. In 1865 he returned to Pennsylvania and secured employment as conductor with the Pennsylvania Railroad Company, serving in that capacity until 1870. In that year he turned his attention to mercantile pursuits, and in partnership with McClure Hammond established a general store at Bolivar, which they conducted until 1883, when Mr. West disposed of his interest to his partner and led a retired life. During his management of the business he also sold tickets and served as freight agent for the Pennsylvania Railroad Company. He was an attendant of the Methodist church, and member of Mountain Lodge, No. 281, A. F. and A. M., Altoona, Pennsylvania, having joined in June, 1866.
