He was born on the old family homestead, which was in the Herman family for generations; the farm was called "Maple Hall," and on it Mr. Herman passed his entire life. He was educated at the common schools, and later took an academic course at New Kingston. He then went west, and on his return he married. After marriage he and his wife went to housekeeping on the old family homestead, and there they reared their family. Mr. and Mrs. Herman were devout members of Trinity Evangelical Lutheran Church, Mechanicsburg. In politics Mr. Herman was a Democrat.
