General Notes: Husband - John Hepburn
During his early years he was a cotton spinner in his native country, and being unusually intelligent became an expert and invented the cotton thread spool when only about eighteen years of age. He was then in the employ of the celebrated cotton thread making firm, Coats and Company. In 1842 he came to America for the first time and employed him-self in the lumber business; he remained only a year, at the expiration of which he returned to his native land. He came again in 1848 and settled at Gloucester City, New Jersey, where he soon entered the marble business in which he remained for over thirty-five years. Being a man of unusual ability, he quickly attained prominence in his adopted country and became a member of the city council. At first he was an adherent of the Democratic party, but when Lincoln became a candidate for the presidency so great was his admiration for the man that he voted the Republican ticket and was thereafter a supporter of the party.
