He and his wife were born in the north of Ireland, but the paternal an­cestors came to the British Isles from Hol­land.

After the death of his wife, in 1861, he decided to emigrate to America, but the family, including his son and three daughters, did not get started until 1866. They settled in Washington County, Vermont.
