He came to Crawford County, PA, in 1823 with his parents. He was reared on a farm and educated at the common schools. He served his township as Auditor and School Director several terms. He was Clerk of the Congregational Church and was a Deacon in the same for years. In politics, was originally a Whig, later a Republican.
