He was born in Venango County, Pennsylvania, and removed with his family to Worth Township, Mercer County, when a child. He inherited his father's farm near Hendersonville and lived there during his life. He and his wife had four sons in the Civil War, representing four different states. He voted the Democratic ticket, and was an elder in the Cumberland Presbyterian Church.
