He was born at the Hair homestead in Washington County, Pennsylvania. He graduated from Jefferson College in that county in 1832, and then went to Michigan, where he pursued his studies in a theological seminary. He was licensed to preach by the Monroe Presbytery of Michigan, and settled in that state.
