He was educated at the schools of McCandless township, Allegheny County, Pennsylvania, and has always followed farming. In 1862 he enlisted in Co. F, 139th P. V. I., served until the close of the Civil War, and was acting second lieutenant.
In 1884 he was elected justice of the peace; he was also school director, and was a member of U. V. L. Encampment, No. 6. He and his family were members of Hiland Presbyterian Church of Perrysville, of which he was an elder.
