General Notes: Husband - Ernest A. Helmbold

He was a college student preparing himself for the ministry at the time his father decided to immigrate to the United States. This changed the course of his life, as he was compelled to abandon his studies and give up his intention of becoming a minister. After locating in Butler County, Pennsylvania, he engaged in agricultural pursuits, and subsequently in merchandising, which became his life vocation. He and his wife were the parents of six sons and six daughters, only four of whom were still living in 1895.

He was a very successful farmer for several years, being the owner of six hundred acres of land. In 1847 he engaged in merchandising at Saxonburg, and was one of the successful merchants of the county for a long period. He was an ardent Democrat, and the Democratic candidate for member of the legislature at one time, and though he carried Butler County by a handsome majority, was defeated by the heavy Republican vote of Lawrence County. He was a prominent member of the Evangelical Protestant church of Saxonburg, and a very generous contributor towards that organization.
